The Heart Speaks
She sat
In her leopard chair
Basking in the sun’s rays dancing off the afternoon chill of the windowpane
Healing
Resting
Recovering
Receiving love and prayers and positive energy
Through her ginger crown
Down to her painted coral toes
A few days before with each labored breath
She was losing her faith
Until it found her
And then she remembered
That the highest level of faith is trust
In hope
In revival
In a power higher than herself
And finally with an exhale and a smile – and salty tears
She closed her eyes
And felt the earth’s harmonious vibrations –
From the Nambé Pueblo Native Americans she worshipped with just a month earlier
To the echo of her children’s laughter from years ago
Along with the joy in her granddaughter’s eyes
All tucked deeply into her memory for safe keeping
But she could also feel the other side of it;
The pain of the world
The heaviness of war
The diseases and heartbreak and poverty
Yet, right as the sun settled in to kiss the day goodnight
She remembered the moon in all her radiant aura lighting a path for humankind
And she nodded her head to the leaf-fallen trees
Waving to her from outside through the fiery sunset
She envisioned the gorge of the mountains – brave and steadfast in its strength
And the river’s crest hugging her with the flowing gift of life
Like a heart protected in a mama’s womb
Then her soul was cracked open
Like a thousand birds greeting the morning
And she sat back, took a sip of her tea
And was humbly reminded of sweet precious life.
